# Work inside a conversation

A Gideon chat gives you ways to revise, branch, plan, and direct work without losing the thread. Start with the message controls and the composer’s + menu.

## Branch or rewind
**Branch from here** copies the conversation up to the selected message into a new chat. The original stays intact, and the new chat keeps a link to its origin. Use it to explore a second direction.

**Rewind to here** is available on an earlier message you sent. It replaces the visible ending after your edit and asks for confirmation. Removed turns are retained at that point; restoring them creates another session rather than swapping the active conversation. Retention is bounded, so rewind is not a backup system.

Temporary and incognito conversations do not offer branching because there is no retained transcript to copy.

## Plan before work starts
In a started chat, choose **+ → Plan this first**. Review the plan above the composer. You can edit it, comment and redraft, approve and run it, or cancel plan mode. Approving continues in the same conversation.

## Steer the next step
You can quote a message to focus a reply, search the loaded conversation, and use an available interrupt control when the direction needs changing. Check whether a message is queued or has actually started; queued work is not a completed result.

## Add visual context
The screen-snipping control depends on browser screen-capture support. If it is absent, attach an image instead. Review the captured area for unrelated private information before sending.

See [privacy and approvals](/docs/trust-and-safety/privacy-and-approvals) for temporary and incognito behavior.
