# Use Files and the terminal

Files and Terminal expose Gideon’s working environment. In hosted Gideon this is a remote workspace, not the computer running your browser.

## Explore and edit files
Open **Files**. Choose a file in Explorer to view or edit it. Create a new file or folder with the toolbar, upload material, and refresh when the listing needs updating. Watch upload progress and use Cancel when the wrong input was selected.

Search file contents in the search box; narrow the results with an include glob such as `*.py`. The file finder and content search answer different questions: one locates a name, the other a matching passage.

## Save a useful output
Use **Save as artifact** to give a file an artifact name. Open the resulting entry to confirm its content. Check unsaved edits before closing a file or switching tasks.

## Run a terminal session
Open **Terminal** and create a session. Confirm the directory before running a command. Use the session list to return to ongoing work, and close a session when it is no longer needed. The terminal drawer can also keep a shell close to the current page.

Commands may affect real workspace files and connected resources. Inspect the command and its output; do not run a pasted instruction just because it appears inside an untrusted document.

## File checkpoints
With Chat file checkpoints enabled, Gideon can save pre-edit bytes for eligible files. This is separate from conversation rewind. Sensitive files and files outside the capture limits may not be restorable. Read [chat settings](/docs/settings/chat-and-checkpoints).
